Coaches preaching pad level. So what does that mean?

May 26, 2019

South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp will talk about “pad level” often when discussing where his younger players need to improve. At least a few of his assistants will mention it during their biannual chats with the media. (READ MORE)

CWM has been working on this aspect of our play since day one. It takes some doing to get implemented. Some of the newbies have kind of ignored it but know they understand this is a huge part of our game. If you don't have the leverage your going to get beat at your assignment. When I went out to see CWM first live practice I went with 2 Gamecock legends. Both commented right off the bat that the pad levels were way to high on both sides of the ball and that will take time to correct.

We were taught pad level constantly in high school.  We had a metal frame shute you had to fun through and come up at the end and hit someone.  If you were not low enough in that shute the metal edges would hit you in the back and leave you a nice reminder you were not low enough.  I was forced into some offensive line play due to injuries and people now knowing how to follow a simple snap count.  As an undersized lineman leverage was they key.

I never played, but reading the article got me to thinking that there could or should be a device that would force a player to lower his pad level on a tackling dummy or other such practice devices. Like many things, building muscle memory is what makes those non-intuitive tasks become more natural. Of course I was thinking something along the lines of live cattle prods on either side of the dummy at just above the appropriate level.
