Obviously Joker Phillips' firing at Kentucky means that Dabo Swinney now has no competition in NCAA football for the dumbest name of any active head coach. On a serious note, what other jobs in the SEC are going to be open? I know Arkansas is open at the end of the season, but I wonder what the chances really are that either/both Dooley at Tennessee or Chizik at Auburn gets the boot at the end of the season? I think Dooley may be able to survive but his defensive coordinator and staff may have to fall on a sword for him to keep his job. I don't know what to think about Chizik at Auburn. It's not clear if he knows what he's doing. He was not successful at Iowa State but was somehow hired at Auburn despite that lack of success. He won a championship completely on the backs of Newton and Fairley, who were difference-makers beyond like you ever see at the college level. Seriously, the only guys that dominant we've seen in the last decade or so were Tebow, Suh, and RG3, and Chizik had one on each side of the ball.
Who are the best choices for these positions and/or potential positions?
Tony Franklin, who is the OC at La Tech, would be an interesting possibility at Kentucky. He was at Auburn but before that was the QB coach at Kentucky with Couch, Lorenzen, Boyd, et al.
I think Kliff Kingsbury, the OC at Texas A&M, has to be a hot property after the performance of his offense this year in their first year in the SEC. Kevin Sumlin is still new at A&M, so I see no reason why Kingsbury would stick around if opportunity came knocking.
Art Briles and/or Philip Montgomery, his OC at Baylor, would also be interesting choices for a team looking for a big offense.
Arkansas has provided most of the rumors thus far, with names like Charlie Strong, Tommy Tuberville, Butch Davis, and of course Jon Gruden, being mentioned repeatedly.
Would any of those names be immediately disappear from the Arkansas list if Mack Brown's days at Texas came to an end? That seems less likely with some recent success in Austin, but the boosters there can't be pleased with the overall direction of that program, which quite frankly, should be dominant. I could see Gruden at Texas before I could see him anywhere else. They could pay him whatever it took to get him to sign on.
Chris Petersen's name still pops up whenever big jobs open up. Boise isn't the hot name they have been the last few years, so I wonder if he'd jump ship. Tennessee isn't afraid to throw money at someone and they have always recruited out west. I oculd see them going after him. With their defensive problems, I could also see them talking to Chavis at LSU.
If Chizik gets the axe, who would the top prospects be for that job? Malzahn maybe? Maybe Kirby Smart? Or is Smart waiting around on Georgia fans to figure out that Richt has taken them absolutely as far as he can?
Just looking for some discussion. Comments?
