As long as bowls survive, college football’s head men back four-team proposal (AKA +1)

From Steve Spurrier’s perspective, college football’s move to a playoff system comes at the perfect time for South Carolina.

“I was (a playoff proponent) way back, and then I didn’t worry about it when I went to South Carolina because we weren’t in position,” Spurrier said. “But now that we are in position, I like the four teams, certainly I do.”

The commissioners of college football’s major conferences essentially agreed last month that the sport — which has decided its title with bowl games for more than a century — will move to a four-team playoff. While several legislative hurdles must be cleared, the change is expected to take place in 2014.

“Everybody will be a little bit happier, and maybe four or five years from now we’ll have eight teams playing it down the way all the other sports do,” Spurrier said while playing in the Chick-fil-A Bowl Challenge golf tournament here. “I (will) like the eight-team (playoff), when we go to that in about five years.”

Many of the game’s most high-profile coaches told The State they support the upcoming change but want to monitor such issues as where the national semifinals and final would be played and how the fours teams are selected.

“When they created the BCS, I think they solved a lot of problems, but I think having one more game is good,” Tennessee’s Derek Dooley said. “There is always that third team that has a compliant. You can say, ‘Well, there’s going to be a fifth team now,’ but it’s usually not as good a complaint as the third team.”
