MOORESVILLE, N.C.
Defensive lineman Jamil Dukes 6'5" 295lbs of Mooresville, N.C., had been coveting an SEC scholarship offer since his recruitment began. He finally got it earlier this week when Will Muschamp and South Carolina pulled the trigger.
Dukes, who is committed to East Carolina, said he could not have been happier when he received the news.
“I was shocked because I didn’t think it was going to come. I was waiting on an SEC offer, and when it came I was really excited because I wasn’t expecting it,” he said. “It means a lot to me. I love the SEC.”
Dukes is planning to visit South Carolina on Jan. 15. He said he remains committed to ECU but does not have a timeline for a final decision. He also has offers from West Virginia, Colorado State and Georgia Southern and has gotten heavy interest from North Carolina State.
“He’s very explosive, and for a big man, he’s very athletic,” his coach, Hal Capps, said. “He plays on our basketball team and does shot put and discus with track. He plays tight end and fullback for us. He’s got great hands. The number one thing South Carolina would get is a really, really good athlete who is also 6-4 and 300 pounds.”
Dukes played in only six games this season before an MRI revealed a cyst on his hip. He underwent a long rehab process and is working to get back to 100 percent.
“It was terrible. I thought it was just a hip sprain or something, but to find out when I got my MRI that it was a cyst, I was upset,” he said. “I missed the last six games. I only played six games this season. It was terrible.”
In those six games Dukes recorded 50 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and five sacks from the defensive tackle position.
Last season, he made 63 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and nine sacks and was named Defensive Player of the Year in Mooresville’s region.
Capps said he believes some schools backed off after Dukes’ injury, but he believes that is a mistake.
“There’s two ways to look at it. You can say he’s a lot fresher because he didn’t play the last half of his senior year or you can say is he injury prone?” Capps said. “He’s not injury prone. This is the only injury he’s ever had, and it was just a freak thing.”
Dukes said he is eager to visit the South Carolina campus, and Capps said if he ends up at South Carolina he will have a successful career.
“I think he would have a great upside in their program because he would be in an outstanding weight training program,” Capps said. “The sky is the limit for him. He has been very successful here and still hasn’t been in that type of program that can really get him training at a new level for his craft.”
