Comparing Muschamp's buyout terms to the rest of the SEC

Sept. 25, 2019

Very good read here recommend all to read. Gives you a very good view what today coaches receive in these contract deals.  The face of Collage football is turning into a pro stile business and the ever growing popular pay to play will totally take it to this level.

South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp has six years, including this one, on a contract that expires on December 31, 2024. Should the school terminate his contract, he would be owed 75 percent of his remaining contract. (VIEW ARTICLE) FREE / 247SPORTS

Another WTF moment that provides insight about the state of our athletics program.

What I take away from reading that.....Gus and Kirby get a little bit more guaranteed, but a TON MORE of success.  Will should not have been given a raise and extension, that's obvious.

JD

Still wondering why Tanner gave him a raise and extension.  Where was he going to go?
I distinctly remember when Muschamp was hired the common feeling is that we were a 5-6 year rebuild.

Saying he had to build a recruiting operation from scratch is an understatement, I think most people are conveniently forgetting the disaster Jr left as RC.  We were hosting recruits and families, instead of having any sort of structure, meals, etc Jr was dumping his kids unwanted Halloween candy on a table.

Unless it’s a very high profile guy, most recruits start getting identified during their Sophomore or Jr years.  Muschamp was 3 years behind when he took over because we’d done a poor job recruiting younger guys. That’s why he was literally holding camps every day trying to identify under the radar guys.

I’d say as a whole our freshmen and sophomores are ahead of the bulk of the Jrs and Sr’s. The vast majority of the guys he had to sign his first couple of years wouldn’t be starting for the teams we’re playing against. Kinlaw could start for pretty much anyone. It goes down quick after that. It’s why we were grabbing so many JUCO’s and transfers just trying to maintain depth.

If he hadn’t received an extension, that immediately would’ve been used against him by other programs.  It’s simple...don’t give an extension, recruiting of higher profile guys goes in the dumper.

I think he’s going to have to revamp Coordinators.  He’s very close with BMac and TRob, but both are struggling at times. BMac has had his moments, but TRob has been the real head scratcher.

Wouldn’t surprise me to see him reach out to DJ Durkin to be DC, I can see TRob moving on somewhere else. What would shock the world would be to have Durkin take over as DC, and convince Deion to coach DB’s. He’s already coaching a HS team, once Shadeur graduates I can’t see him continuing that.

OC, I don’t have a clue. I think he respects BMac, but at times I think he’s struggling as OC. I think we have the QB in place, RB should be solid, but we desperately need more game breaking WR’s.

I remember the common feeling being WTF? It felt like it did when we hired Sparky Woods.
Yeah I remember a few cheerleaders trying to really the troops while most people acknowledge this was not close to our first choice and hoped

You make some very solid points here.  Coach Will walked into a mess when he first got here and immediately upgraded our recruiting class in about 22 days (people forget that).  His first two years were much improved and last year we just were devastated by injuries to so many defensive and offensive players that it cost us several games.  This year Coach Muschamp & Staff all boasted of having their best team in their four years here and came out of the gate and stumbled against NC.  I think that loss really hurt the fan base in believing that we could be a 9-3 or maybe a 10-2 team.  Now, it looks as though we will be lucky to get to six wins and a bowl game.  I bought into the stuff that our coaching staff was selling and it just has not turned out like any of us thought it would and more so for the coaching staff.  I don't believe in getting rid of   Coach Muschamp or any members of his staff for the next two years, but in that time I would greatly hope that this thing turns around big-time next season or the AD will have to make some strong decisions.  I also think that T-Rob and B-Mac are very good coaches.  We don't get any credit for the fact that USC might be the only D-1 Football School that has a black O/C and D/C.  Besides the fact that these two good coaches are great recruiters, they both have paid their dues to be where they are now and this should also be a benefit to our school when it comes to recruiting.  Coach T-Rob has Coach Muschamp to lean on and Coach B-Mac has Coach Werner and Coach Bentley.  This team just needs a big win and hopefully we can salvage this season and get to a bowl game.  I have been a Gamecock Fan for way too long to give up hope just yet, but I am like the thousands of other Gamecock Fans that want to see it on the field and win some football games.

I think CWM is recruiting well and repaired the relationships with the high school coaches that our last staff neglected . I am more concerned with our coordinators.  I mean look at Dabo.  I think he is a great CEO, but not the best X's and O's guy.  He was smart enough to hire very good to great coordinators and pay them.  After West Virginia killed them in the bowl game, that DC was gone.  Once Chad Morris's offense was no longer working all that well, he got rid of him as well.  Muschamp has to hire better O and D coordinators or he will be gone IMO.  He can't be loyal to guys that are in over their heads and suck at game planning and making adjustments.

I might not sure what you were expecting.

Most people considered Herman and Smart to be interchangeable 1/2 choices.

Herman knew Texas was in the end days of the Charlie Strong death watch. He had absolutely no plans to sign any kind of long term deal with anyone knowing the Texas job was coming open. All he did was use us to leverage a raise from Houston.

Once UGA knew we were zeroing in on Smart they fired a coach who averaged 10 wins/year to keep us from getting him.

At the time he was hired I felt Muschamp would do a good job. I still feel that way.

It sucks losing. The fans get it, the staff gets it, the players get it. I think we’re ahead of where we were when he took over. It’s not enough, but we’re getting there.

I agree with many, I’m not sold on our OC and DC. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Muschamp reach out to Durkin once the season is over. OC...no idea what he’s going to do. BMac is still learning on the job, I’m not sure he’s a long term answer.

What did spurriers recruiting classes look like vs muschamps for the same first 4 years? I hear a lot of “Muschamp has done better recruiting” but has he? I know stars aren’t the best ranking but that’s pretty much all we have to go on to compare correct?

jr may have left crap recruiting but didn’t Lou too?

Did Ray have complete authority to grant the extension  or did the BOT have to approve that?  Must admit that I'm not up on the inner workings of coach contracts but it seems like a terrible move in retrospect to give him such a contract with that level of buyout.  Negotiations are typically won by those with the most leverage and I don't see how Champ ever had that much at all.  I'm thankful for those baseball NC trophies but Ray appeared to be in way over his head while Spurrier was tanking, even further over his head during the coaching search and he hasn't changed that since by offering such a one sided contract.  Don't care what the rest of the conference does.  Champ wanted to be here and we settled on him.  Nobody wanted to take him away and they definitely don't want him now.  As for recruiting, it has leveled off some here lately and we have seen a de-commit.  Could be more if they don't right the ship to some extent.  Go on a run of bad losses and recruits will keep listening to other recruiters.

If it was so clear that we weren't going to get herman or smart, then I would have expected Tanner to have a different 1a/1b. I think that it wasn't so clear that we weren't getting those two and in that case, I expect Tanner to have gone after someone with a better track record that champ. If you weren't disappointed in the hire, I am happy for you. I'm just saying a lot of people were.

Yup....Mike McGee stated after the Brad Scott debacle that they were looking for someone "proven", painfully aware of the mistake that had been made in hiring BS.

He went on to hire Lou and Steve.

Ray didn't get the memo. Rather than hire a "proven" coach, he in fact hired a proven mediocre coach that was fired before it got ugly. On top of that, he had more time than most ADs to research replacements. We're paying filet mignon prices for someone else's leftovers.
