South Carolina won’t have one of its top players on the defensive side of the ball for the “Battle of Columbia,” but the Gamecocks will have a starter back on the other side of the ball.
Head coach Steve Spurrier confirmed Tuesday that Connor Shaw is doing “fine” and will be under center when USC takes on Missouri Saturday.
Shaw originally injured his right (throwing) shoulder in a Week 1 win over Vanderbilt, and then sat out the next week’s game against ECU as Dylan Thompson got the start. He returned to start the UAB game, but was knocked out after aggravating what had previously been diagnosed as a slight shoulder fracture.
Shaw practiced Monday and, GamecockCentral.com wrote, “he looks fine throwing and running the ball.”
Spurrier also addressed the brouhaha that’s developed in regard to this weekend’s opponent’s starting quarterback. James Franklin sat out Mizzou’s game this past weekend after refusing to take painkillers for a lingering shoulder issue, leading some to inexplicably question the quarterback’s toughness and/or manhood.
As far as the Ol’ Ball Coach is concerned, Franklin did nothing wrong.
“That’s why you have other players,” Spurrier said. “I don’t think you ever force a guy to do anything he doesn’t want to do. It’s a personal decision, and after they make whatever decision you move on.”
The coach went on to explain that an unnamed Gamecock didn’t play in the second half of the UAB game because he refused to take fluids intravenously to take care of a cramping issue.
