USC quarterback Connor Shaw is excited about getting his first crack at Georgia Saturday. Shaw is from Flowery Branch, Georgia so facing the main team from his home state brings a little extra zeal this weekend.
“Connor is fired up about playing against his home state university,” said Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier. “We have a lot of Georgia guys like that. South Carolina players that play at Georgia get a kick out of playing their home state university. Connor, it’s his first game action against Georgia. He’s ready to go. He’s looking forward to it. He’s a quarterback that likes the big games and the full stadium.”
Spurrier is known for being especially hard on his quarterbacks, but Shaw has drawn an almost Unparalleled level of praise from the HBC. Spurrier said Tuesday Shaw is easily the best quarterback he’s had at USC and compared his preparation and knowledge to former Florida quarterback and Heisman trophy winner Danny Wuerffel.
“Connor knows this offense as well as anybody. So he’s ready to handle whatever we work on that week. And he’s such a good student of the game, you know, he studies his ball plays and knows where everyone is going. That is very helpful for a quarterback to know where everybody is going.”
Spurrier said what Shaw lacks in glitz and glamor, he makes up for with consistency; “That’s why we’ve won so much with Connor. Not necessarily the brilliant plays, but the lack of those real bad plays that can hurt you. The ability to just take care of the ball is something he is really good at.”
Shaw isn’t the only quarterback fired up for this weekend’s game. Georgia starter Aaron Murray tweeted a photo shopped picture of him and his teammates playing off the Chick-fil-A slogan and holding signsthat read “Eat Mor Gam Cok.” Who says this isn’t a rivalry?
