Cool twist to Sandidge recruitment? A phone call from Clowney
January 29, 2018
Rick Sandidge has been going through the recruiting process for so long now that it mostly all feels the same, but something happened Friday that stood out to the four-star defensive lineman from North Carolina.
That was a call from Jadeveon Clowney, the former South Carolina superstar who now plays for the Houston Texans. The phone call came to Marcus Lattimore’s telephone on Friday, the first day of Sandidge’s official visit to USC.
“We really didn’t talk that much,” Sandidge told The State. “I just had a hard time believing it was actually him on the phone.”
Although Sandidge called the conversation the coolest thing that has happened during his recruiting process, he didn’t ask any advice from Clowney. In fact, he was so surprised to get the call that it only lasted “about a minute,” Sandidge said.
Sandidge still is considering the Gamecocks, Georgia and North Carolina, he said. He will announce his decision on National Signing Day on Feb. 7.
The 6-foot-5, 285-pounder wore a black, long-sleeve Gamecocks shirt to school at Concord High School on Monday, but he said that’s wasn’t because he was leaning toward the Gamecocks.
“That was the shirt that was on top of the pile today,” he said.
Playing time will be the biggest factor in Sandidge’s decision, he said, and the Gamecocks guaranteed him this weekend that he will play as a true freshman, he said.
“They are saying I’m a priority. They said I will play for sure. It’s just a matter of how much I play,” he said. “I have a good relationship with the coaches and players, but I can say that about Georgia, too. The only thing I’m worried about at Georgia is I know I’m going to get playing time, but my chances of getting a lot of playing time is less than at South Carolina.”
