Gamecocks coordinators Marcus Satterfield (offense) and Clayton White (defense) met with the media, Wednesday, as they continue preparing South Carolina for this week’s home game against Charlotte.
Both units are licking wounds following a 48-7 thrashing at the hands of top-ranked Georgia. The Gamecock's offense has struggled mightily on third down, ranking 123rd nationally in third-down conversion percentage through three games. Their inability to sustain drives against Georgia compounded the pressure on a defense playing shorthanded due to injury. But quarterback Spencer Rattler and the offense have a chance to shine, Saturday, as they will match up with a 49ers defense giving up more than 45 points/game. Perhaps, this will be the breakout game for the Gamecock's rushing attack, which has not been a major factor in either of the Gamecock's losses. South Carolina’s veteran line and talented stable of backs will square off with a defense that surrendered 303 yards on the ground to William & Mary earlier this season.
Clayton White’s unit hasn’t escaped scrutiny, either, ranking 125th in rush defense and 113th in scoring defense. White told the assembled media that the effort has been there, but communication, getting his defenders’ eyes in the right place, and tackling is areas where he’s looking for improvement.
Take it as you will, Satterfield insists the offense isn’t that far off from what he and Beamer want it to look like, rinse and repeat over and over.
“I think that it just takes work,” Satterfield said. “I know it’s a boring answer and everybody rolls their eyes, but you just have to keep working. You have to keep getting time together, keep playing games, and have to keep screwing up and figuring out why you screwed up and getting back to it. I honestly truly believe that we’re getting really close.” That Satterfield is preaching patience or assuring things are close likely won’t appease the keyboard cowboys that have called for his firing for the bulk of the last two years. That said, there’s reason to take South Carolina’s embattled offensive coordinator at his word.
Fact. The Gamecocks haven’t eclipsed 100 yards rushing as a team (!!) in three games this season. They’re currently averaging just 70.33 yards per contest good for 124th of 131 FBS teams nationally and second-worst among the 69 Power Five schools.
Quotes
DC Clayton White: Says the young men suffering injuries are still involved to the extent they're able to be, but some of them take a step back from football for the moment. He makes it clear that first and foremost he cares about their health, both mental and physical.
Satterfield, when asked about Georgia's defense: "That was like an NFC South team last year"
Gamecocks OC Marcus Satterfield on what needs to improve with the offense: "I honestly, truly believe we're getting really close. Nobody wants to hear it, but it takes time, it takes hard work."
