Dakereon Joyner helping Gamecocks recruit target Bryce Thompson

August 31, 2017

Dutch Fork’s Bryce Thompson says his friendship with Fort Dorchester quarterback Dakereon Joyner will be on hold for a few hours Friday night.

That’s when Thompson and Dutch Fork host Joyner and the Patriots in one of the most anticipated matchups of the season. Dutch Fork is No. 1 ranked team in Class 5A and Fort Dorchester is No. 2.

“I can’t be buddy, buddy with him this week,” Thompson said Wednesday after practice. “On the field, we can’t be friends. Off the field, we could be boys.”

Thompson and Joyner are two of the top prospects in the state with Joyner ranked No. 4 and Thompson No. 7, according to 247Sports.

Thompson said he and Joyner talked a few days ago but likely wouldn’t talk before the big game Friday. The two exchanged plenty of friendly barbs with each other, talking about the anticipated matchup.

“I told him his defense was suspect and he told me mine is too. We went back and forth,” Thompson said. “It is friendly trash talk but I got to defend my team and tell him my team is going to beat his team down.”

Thompson and Joyner’s relationship has grown over the past few months with Joyner “constantly in his ear” trying to persuade him to commit to South Carolina. The Fort Dorchester senior committed to the Gamecocks in July and will enroll early in January.

Thompson said Wednesday he has told the coaching staff of the school where he is going but hasn’t announced it publicly.

Dutch Fork got the best of Joyner and the Patriots last season, winning twice including in the Class 5A Lower State championship game. But Thompson was at Ben Lippen last year, helping the Falcons win their first SCISA 3A title.

Thompson, who starts at receiver, should get his chance to help slow Joyner when he lines up at defensive back.

“We got to keep him contained,” Thompson said. “He is the best quarterback in the state and probably on the whole coast and he is the reason why they are good. Once we contain him, we could hold our own after that.”
