Dec. 30, 2021
South Carolina wide receiver/quarterback Dakereon Joyner was named the 2021 Duke’s Mayo Bowl MVP after the Gamecocks’ 38-21 win over North Carolina on Thursday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Joyner, a native of North Charleston, S.C., played a significant amount of snaps at quarterback for the first time in the 2021 season after spending the majority of the regular season starting at wide receiver.
He completed 100% of his passes on Thursday, going 9 of 9 for 160 yards and one touchdown against the Tar Heels, adding another 64 yards on 10 rushing attempts.
South Carolina quarterback room was depleted heading into the bowl game, with starting quarterback Jason Brown opting for the transfer portal after Spencer Rattler announced he’d be joining the Gamecocks in 2022. Joyner, who had previously taken some snaps at quarterback during his time in Columbia, was the primary signal caller against UNC, splitting the role with Zeb Noland. Before Thursday, Joyner hadn’t attempted a pass since 2019.
In the 2021 regular season, Joyner had caught 24 receptions for 221 yards and a touchdown throughout 2021 and added 13 yards on eight rushes.
