Dakereon Joyner talks 2
MATTHEWS, N.C. — Several South Carolina recruits were in the Charlotte area on Sunday for the annual regional stop of Nike’s “The Opening.”
Competing in the strong field of quarterbacks was 2018 4-star Dakereon Joyner, who will announce his commitment on Father’s Day, to honor his late father.
“It’s going to be exciting, but it’s probably going to be more emotional than anything,” Joyner said. “It’s for my father. It’s dedicated for my father. It will be a very emotional day for my mother and my family.”
South Carolina and North Carolina State are the finalists.
“Really, I’m just comfortable at those two schools,” he said. “I feel at home at N.C. State and South Carolina, so not too far from home. It’s good for my family. It’s good for myself. Both offenses, I feel like I can get in to it and be a big factor in both offenses.”
South Carolina was first offer for the 6-foot-1, 203-pound prospect from Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston, S.C. He’s been on campus to visit with the Gamecocks close to 50 times.
“I’m always up there,” Joyner said. “I’ve got family up there, so I always drop by.”
During the combine portion of camp Sunday, Joyner was timed at 4.61 seconds in the 40-yard dash. His vertical jump was 34 inches. In the shuttle, he ran a 4.14.
Rick Sandidge on South Carolina
It’s been a while since 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge has been to South Carolina for a visit. Though he wasn’t 100 percent certain, he believes he hasn’t visited since the 2016 home opener vs. East Carolina.
“They’re improving a lot. They’re going to keep on steady going up,” Sandidge said. “That impresses me a lot, how he [Will Muschamp] moved to a different school and is helping them out a lot, too.”
Running backs coach Bobby Bentley serves as the area recruiter for Sandidge, who’s a 2018 prospect out of Concord (N.C.) High School. Defensive line coach Lance Thompson is in contact “a little bit.”
Sandidge will “probably” return to South Carolina this summer.
Before narrowing his list of 11 even further, Sandidge will take visits to Ohio State, Michigan and LSU. All three were included on the list, along with Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.
There is no commitment date in mind.
“I want to go as long as I can,” Sandidge said.
