Dawn Staley And The Gamecocks Ready For A Super Showdown With LSU

February 10, 2023

“Super Sunday” is almost here, and SEC women’s basketball is serving up quite the appetizer prior to the matchup between Kansas City and Philadelphia. South Carolina will play #3 LSU in front of a sold-out Colonial Life Arena crowd and an ESPN television audience at 2 p.m. to defend its #1 ranking and school record 30-game winning streak.

On Friday, USC head coach Dawn Staley met with the media to preview the eighth matchup between two SEC teams ranked inside the Associated Press top three. However, Sunday’s game will be the first such matchup that does not feature the Tennessee Lady Vols.

Prior to the Super Bowl, a big sports showdown with championship implications is set to take place Sunday in Columbia. No. 1 South Carolina will take on No. 3 LSU as the only two undefeated teams left in women’s college basketball and both 11-0 in conference play. The Gamecocks have won 30 straight games dating back to last year, and the Tigers have won 23 in a row. Sunday’s winner will take over first place in the SEC standings. LSU has the advantage of rest, with USC being its only game this week. South Carolina defeated Auburn 83-48 on Thursday. The Tigers lead the all-time series 22-17. LSU hasn’t defeated South Carolina in Columbia since 2010.

CHAMPIONS DEFENDING THEIR CROWN

South Carolina has won two of the last three SEC regular-season titles, and six of the last nine dating back to 2014. USC’s won 10 or more conference games every year since 2012. Aliyah Boston has played like the reigning National Player of the Year throughout conference play. Her activity on both ends of the court is a big reason the Gamecocks are undefeated, and the attention she receives from defenses opens up space for others.
