Dax Hollifield sees South Carolina again

Nov. 04, 2016

Hollifield’s back in Columbia

Four-star linebacker Dax Hollifield, the No. 2-ranked inside linebacker in the Class of 2018, visited South Carolina for the Tennessee game.

“It was great. I really wanted to see them win and they finally got a win. I was really happy about that,” he said. “That was probably the best thing about the whole visit.”

Hollifield joined Muschamp on the field for a pre-game conversation. He also spoke with linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler and running backs coach Bobby Bentley, his recruiter of record.

All three spoke with him a few weeks earlier when he visited for the Georgia game.

“It was pretty much the same (message),” Hollifield said. “They’re building a foundation and they need great players to build on top of that.”

A few more visits are on the docket before the end of the season.

“I might try to get back to Columbia for one more game this year, but I know I’m going to Virginia Tech and UNC,” Hollifield said. “That was my goal this year, to see Virginia Tech, UNC and South Carolina two times, because those are my top three for sure. … I’ve got to see Virginia Tech and UNC one more time.”

This weekend, linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler will spend more time with 2017 commitment Eldridge Thompson.

More on Thompson
Some of the details on Eldridge Thompson and his injured shoulder were shared earlier this week.

“Life has been pretty different,” he said. “I have to do everything with my left hand, but it’s going pretty good.”

The 3-star JUCO linebacker from Coffeyville Community College will be on campus this weekend for his official visit.
“The atmosphere, I want to see that and the team chemistry, that’s what I really want to see,” Thompson said. “I’ve been there during the summer, for my commitment, but I just want to see the team and the atmosphere.”

Thompson is listed as the No. 3 JUCO outside linebacker in the country. Over the next three seasons, the Gamecocks coaches think he can be a versatile player.

“They really haven’t gone in-depth, but they were saying that I’m very athletic, so they can use me anywhere and my speed, so I’ll be doing a lot next year,” Thompson said.

Class snapshot
According to the 247Sports Composite, South Carolina’s 2017 haul is the No. 15-ranked class in the country.
Led by a quartet of 4-star prospects that includes cornerback Jamyest Williams, wide receiver OrTre Smith, safety Hamsah Nasirildeen and defensive end M.J. Webb, the group is the seventh best in the SEC.

The class hasn’t had a commitment since Smith made his announcement on his birthday, Sept. 11. It has lost a couple this season: 3-star wide receiver Shawn Smith and 4-star offensive lineman T.J. Moore.

On the offensive side of the ball, they have one player committed at quarterback, running back and tight end. Two wide receivers and three offensive linemen are also committed.

Defensively, there are three linemen committed, including JUCO placement Javon Kinlaw. There are four linebackers and six defensive backs on the commitment board, too.

Geographically, South Carolina is the most well-represented with 10. Four are from North Carolina, three are from Florida and Georgia and one is from Tennessee.

On the road again
Lower Richland High School (Hopkins, S.C.) shooting guard Clyde Trapp Jr. is currently on an official visit to Clemson.

That’s according to a report from Phil Kornblut.

Tripp, however, has not received an offer from the Tigers.

South Carolina, Charlotte and Rice have hosted him on official visits. An offer from Clemson is believed to be the one he’s awaiting.
