COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 15, 2012) – The University of South Carolina football squad took advantage of unseasonably warm conditions in Columbia to hold its second practice of the spring on Thursday afternoon. Once again the squad was clad in helmets and shorts as they worked out in 80 degree weather.
“Connor (Shaw) had a good day,” said head coach Steve Spurrier. “Connor got a lot better from his first day. We’re working on his fundamentals. He just needs (to work on) the timing of his throwing. We’re going to work on that, but he can run with the ball and can make smart decisions. That’s why we won some of the close games. We didn’t have some of the stupid plays we’ve had a lot in the past. Connor should have a better year next year.”
Several former players were on hand for Thursday’s practice, including Chris Culliver, Patrick DiMarco, Cliff Matthews, Travian Robertson, Darian Stewart and Terrence Campbell.
Coach Spurrier announced that at 11 a.m. prior to the spring game on Saturday, April 14, the Gamecocks will have a Youth Day for kids in the Columbia area. “We’re inviting the Boys and Girls Clubs, the First T organization, the Children Home kids, Special Olympic kids, really anybody in the area to listen to some of our guys talk a little bit to the kids to try to give them a little motivation, give them a little game plan for life and so forth. Hopefully we can get a wonderful turnout of the young people in this area before the spring game.”
The next practice is scheduled for Friday at 4:15 p.m. and the team will be in full pads for the first time this spring. All practices are open to the public. Fans are reminded that no photography is allowed after the first 15 minutes of practice.
