DB commit Zay Brown likes South Carolina’s direction under Will Muschamp
July 25, 2016
For Zay Brown, it was a matter of time and checking one more item off the list before he could make his commitment to South Carolina.
On Saturday, the 2017 Athens (Ga.) Clarke Central safety’s time came as he got his mother on campus to sign off on the decision to become the latest commit in the South Carolina class.
“When I camped up there (in June), I really knew they were the school I wanted to go to,” Brown said. “I was just waiting to make my decision until my mom visited with me and she could see the place, see why I like it and get her approval on it. (On Saturday), I got it so I committed.”
The 6-foot, 180-pound Brown is commit No. 17 for the Gamecocks in 2017, picking USC over offers from Wake Forest, Colorado State and others. He said the decision dated back to when he came to camp this summer and saw how he was coached by defensive backs coach/defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson like he already was one of his players. When he got the chance to see the new facilities, dorms and the campus, he was even more sold with the total package that was being offered to him at South Carolina.
Simply, Brown said he sees everything moving in a positive direction since coach Will Muschamp was hired.
“He is definitely getting things going in the right direction,” Brown said. “Not only do I see it, but players there see it and with him being the kinda guy is and knowing a lot about football, he knows exactly what he is doing and is getting the right guys around him to make things happen and make things change.”
His mom saw what she needed to as well, as Brown said she just wanted to make sure he would be well taken care of once he heads to Columbia in the fall of 2017.
Brown’s commitment pushed the Gamecocks to No. 23 in the 247Sports Composite rankings, but it’s his position group that he is most excited about when he looks at the class.
“The DBs, I watched film of a lot of guys that have committed and we all play the same,” he said. “We bring a lot to the table. We are going to go in there and work hard and try to be the best defensive backs in the nation. It’s a good group and we will try to take off with that.”
And now that he is part of the class, he said the staff can’t wait to get him – and his mom – back on campus again.
“They were very excited and happy that I had committed to be part of the family now,” he said. “They are ready to get me back up there – me and my mom – for a game to see how all of that goes down.”
