DB Kaleb Chalmers finalizes South Carolina transfer plans

Dec. 14, 2016

REENWOOD, S.C. — On Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood High School, former Clemson cornerback Kaleb Chalmers finalized his announcement to transfer to South Carolina.

Before a gathering of friends and family, Greenwood coach Dan Pippin, who coached Chalmers during his senior year of high school, referred to the No. 14-ranked JUCO cornerback as a “great character kid.”

“For him to go through the adversity that he went through, then be able to sign today — we’ve had a lot of conversations. It’s great for him and his family, and us,” Pippin said. “Great kid and a great, great family.”

After Chalmers was dismissed from Clemson in the spring, he spent most of 2016 at Northwest Mississippi Community College, hoping to get another shot at a Power 5 program. He took an official visit to South Carolina in November and another to Ole Miss last weekend.

News of his decision to sign with the Gamecocks broke on Wednesday morning.

“He’s got great ball skills, great hips and he’ll strike you, which is a big thing, I think,” Pippin said. “A lot of kids are … I don’t want to say afraid, but he’s going to strike ya. He’ll hit ya and he’s going to hit you with a lot of force. He likes it.”

The 6-foot, 180-pound redshirt sophomore will have three seasons of eligibility remaining when he enrolls at South Carolina in January.
