DE King Joseph Edwards Learned A Lot About Gamecocks During Saturday Visit

SPORTSTALK/ March 21, 2023

1679436275364.pngDE KingJoseph Edwards (6-5 242) of Hoschton, GA visited USC last season for the Texas A&M and left with a favorable impression of the game day atmosphere on a day the Gamecocks beat up on the Aggies. Last Saturday Edwards returned to the USC campus with his mother and brother for a more in-depth visit with head coach Shane Beamer and defensive ends coach Sterling Lucas.

“I liked the campus. I got to talk to a few coaches and staff members. Got to talk to the head coach, Coach Beamer, so that’s pretty nice,” Edwards said. “They told me about their culture and stuff and the way they do stuff there and how it’s different from everywhere else.”

Lucas would be Edwards’s position coach should he decide to sign with the Gamecocks. He said their relationship building is a work in progress.

“It’s going pretty good. Me and him been talking a lot,” Edwards said. “Been talking a lot about how they can use me on the defensive side of the ball, stuff like that.”

Edwards also got the one-on-one attention from Beamer that the Gamecocks’ top targets always receive on a visit. He had the chance to sit down with the Gamecocks’ head man before departing.

“He was just asking me how I like it and stuff there and how he sees me on the defensive side of the ball, stuff like that,” Edwards said. “They are one of my top schools for sure.”

Edwards, indeed, had the Gamecocks on his long, early list of favorites along with Alabama, Georgia, NC State, Southern Cal, Ohio State, Florida State, Oregon, Cincinnati, Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan, Michigan State, Pitt and Oklahoma. Sometime this summer he plans to cut his list down to a more workable number.

Along with USC, Edwards also has visited Georgia, Texas, Florida, Miami and Southern Cal. He plans to visit Auburn April 8th, and he’s also planning a return trip to Columbia later in the spring or in the summer.
