Lakewood DE Tyreek Johnson 6'4" 245lbs got the phone call he was wishing for on Monday, the one from USC head coach Will Muschamp in which he was offered a scholarship.  For the lifelong USC fan, Muschamp’s words were music to Johnson’s ears.  A future commitment to the Gamecocks, in this case, appears to be a forgone conclusion, but Johnson wasn’t ready to give the word once he got the word from Muschamp.

“Not really sure on what my parents think,” Johnson said.  “I’m pretty sure they would like to meet the coaches and have a great talk with them before I do to get everything straight.  Plus, I feel like it would be an honor to talk with the head coach and commit face to face.  I’ve been a fan of South Carolina my whole life and I’m going to take about two weeks to think about it (committing).”

That could happen when Johnson returns to USC for a visit after talking with his parents about a date.  He was there for their junior day earlier this month and that gave Muschamp a chance to see him in person and that, along with a review of his junior film, led to the decision to make the offer.

“It was a pretty exciting moment for me to get an offer from a SEC school,” Johnson said.  “I was very excited and it was a very important point in my life.  He said I’ve got very good grades and on the field I’m physical and have good feet and am very good off the ball.”

Johnson also has an offer from Coastal Carolina and Clemson, Duke and Alabama have been showing interest. They want him to visit but after the USC offer he’s not really seeing the need for that.

“My eyes are looking at South Carolina, that’s my favorite school,” he said.

Last season Johnson totaled 89 tackles with 21 tackles for loss and 10 sacks.  Lakewood coach Brian Jackson said Johnson’s quickness off the snap is impressive.

“Probably one of the best first steps I’ve seen,” he said.  “The way he separates from offensive linemen, his speed and his eye for the ball and pursuit.  He’s a doer and not a talker.”
