Four-star defensive lineman Dexter Wideman 6-foot-4, 255-pound made a surprising commitment to Florida State in late July. Most expected the Palmetto State prospect to stay home and play for the Gamecocks. That may still happen.
“Florida State and (South) Carolina,” Wideman said when asked what schools he was still considering at the Under Armour All-America Game check-in. “I have narrowed it down to those two schools.”
Dexter Wideman shared a few reasons why he originally committed to Florida State, following an unofficial visit to Tallahassee over the summer.
“Nice campus, everything is nice on campus,” Wideman said. “It seemed like a very enjoyable place. The stadium, I loved the stadium, and the locker rooms.”
He will get back to Tallahassee for an official visit on January 31st.
As for the Gamecocks, they sent area recruiter, quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus in-home with Wideman.
“He was just telling me that he isn’t really worried about the commitment part right now,” “They are still going to recruit me all the way to the end.”
The Gamecocks have built a good bond with Wideman due to multiple unofficial visits to Columbia during this season. He will take an official visit to the nearby school on January 17th. He shared what will be unique about his official visit compared to his multiple unofficial visits.
“Just being with the players and the other recruits that are going to be there,” Wideman said. “I am also going to spend time with the coaches.”
A few current commitments for the Gamecocks are staying in Wideman’s ear, he specifically mentioned Gaffney (S.C.) four-star wide receiver Shaq Davidson and Bamberg (S.C.) Ehrhardt four-star tight end Kevin Crosby.
“They have been talking to me a little bit,” Wideman said when asked if they are working on getting him to switch his commitment.
As for where his commitment stands at this time, Wideman wasn’t comfortable with giving a firm answer.
“I am committed to Florida State but Carolina is still in it,”
He is considered the No. 8 defensive tackle in the nation and No. 3 prospect from South Carolina.
