If there was a headliner at South Carolina’s Junior Day on Saturday, it was probably 4 star defensive tackle Nyles Pinckney (Seabrook/Whales Branch). The 6-foot-3, 285-pounder is long thought to be a lean towards Clemson but when he left Columbia on Saturday, he claimed to be wide open.
"I do not have any top schools right now I am just looking at everybody right now and enjoying recruiting," Pinckney said.
Pinckney is a four-star prospect and holds a 0.8995 rating in the 247Sports Composite. He’s held an offer from the Gamecocks since last summer.
"It was a great visit looking around at the academic center, looking around at the campus and looking around at the new facilities they are building,” Pinckney said about what stood out about the visit. " What they are doing with the new facilities and the new dorm. That looks like it is about to be really nice.”
Pinckney spent most of the time on the visit with defensive coaches Lorenzo Ward and Deke Adams.
"Coach Adams really talked to me today about how he can make me a better football player,” Pinckney said. “They let me look at some film and it showed me what they have done in the past and we talked about how many people they have got to the NFL."
The coaching staff didn’t making any guarantees about playing time to Pinckney, who said the coaches told him they believe he has the potential to “be a great player and have a lot of playing time.”
“The last few years they have been really good on defense and I have seen a lot of players go to the NFL,” Pinckney said. “The defensive line has done great and they always seem to have two or three lineman that are really good and make plays."
Pinckney says that he plans to hit a few more Junior Day trips in the coming months but he’s not exactly sure where he’ll go. He’s looking at trips to Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Georgia Tech and Florida State.
Saturday’s visit did help South Carolina’s standing with him though.
"Yeah, I got a better look at the academic center which is big to me and my family,” Pinckney said. “Mostly looking at the academics and the players and what they are trying to do."
