5  star DL Rashan Gary 6'4" 290lbs of Paramus, NJ is one of the country’s top prospects in the 2016 class with offers from coast to coast. As such, he is trying to visit as many schools as possible and late last week he made a run thru USC, Clemson and Georgia. Gary saw the Gamecocks Thursday, Georgia Friday and Clemson Saturday. His mother, who has a brother living in Anderson, also was on the trip and was more than just an idle bystander. Jennifer Coney said she had plenty of questions for the coaches and got plenty of insightful information.

‘I was very pleased with both schools and their plan for academic success and the success rate they have academically in reference to getting their athletes degrees,” Mrs. Coney said. “They had a plan for it and time management, and I know for my son particularly that’s going to be a true concern. They had a plan for it. The facilities are absolutely beautiful. The bad part is I came away the same way that I went in because they are both great schools.”

Gary also has visited Rutgers, Penn State, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Ohio State and Michigan. Later this month he and his mother plan to see Alabama, Ole Miss and Auburn. Coney realizes all the schools will show them quality academics and great facilities, so their plan is to approach things from another angle.

“We’re going to have to go in from the perspective of where do you think you’ll like to be, if that great staff is not there anymore, what school would you like to be at,” Coney said. “God forbid you don’t play football, would you like to go to this school? That’s how we’re going to look at it. Without the coaching staff, which they both did exceptional jobs, made us feel warm and welcomed, showed him everything, there was not a question that I asked that wasn’t answered, Rashan is going to have to put that out of the equation. If football wasn’t there, would I want to go to this school? I think that’s how we’re going to have to look at it.”

Coney said they arrived early at USC Thursday and got the chance to visit with Steve Spurrier and have pictures made with him.

‘He’s a nice guy,” she said. “I met his two sons.”

Dabo Swinney had prior plans with his family Friday that took him away from Clemson and they didn’t get the chance to meet with him in person, but Coney said they did have a conversation with him thru Skype.

“He’s a really nice guy,” Coney said. “What I liked about him most of all was that he said I want you to go out there and visit as many schools as you can and get a good feel on them. If you feel Clemson is the place, come back. I’ve never heard a college coach say that. That was refreshing.”

As part of their Clemson visit, Coney said she and her son also met with the school president at his house.

Coney said her son has no favorites right now and wants to take as many visits as possible between now and the start of training camp this summer. He also wants to take all of his official visits but won’t take any during the season unless he has an off week because he wants to concentrate on his football and his academics. Gary is a 3.8 student and will try to hit the 4.0 mark in his senior season. No decision is expected until National Signing Day.

“He’s enjoying the process and he’s still in awe,” Coney said. “He’s loving it. A young kid goes into these schools and they show him so much love and make him think he’s the best thing since sliced bread. He’s still caught up in that I’m more of a realist. I want my son to enjoy this process for as long as he can before I reel him down and say sit down, this is how it’s going to be.”

Coney said she wants to see as may of her son’s games as possible though she realizes if he goes several hours away from home, she may not be able to see them all. She can live with that.

“I don’t want him that close,” Coney said. “I want him to make his decision without having to check thru me. He’s been raised right. He has a good perspective of right and wrong. He may end up ten minutes away, or he may end up five hours away. But, we’re still early in the process, right? These are awesome, great schools that want Rashan to come play for them. These schools want my son and are going to offer him opportunities, so I want him to embrace the opportunity and have fun.”
