DL Stephon Wynn Jr., son of former Clemson tight end, revisits South Carolina

Nov. 20, 2016

Stephon Wynn Jr., whose father played tight end at Clemson, visited South Carolina on Saturday to watch the Gamecocks’ final home game of 2016.

The 2018 defensive lineman from T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, S.C., was also in town for the home opener against East Carolina.

“It was a good visit,” Wynn said of his most recent trip. “It’s always pretty cool to go down to Columbia, so it was pretty fun.”

While in town for the Western Carolina game, he met with coach Will Muschamp, defensive line coach Lance Thompson and area recruiter Coleman Hutzler.

Muschamp wants Wynn to understand his plan for the future of South Carolina’s program.

“He’s just telling me they’re still in a rebuilding mode and they’re going to get their guys in and pretty soon things are going to turn around for their program,” Wynn said. “They’re getting bowl eligible this year and not with all of their prospects yet, so don’t lose out on them yet.

“Just keep them in mind, because once they get their guys in, they’re going to turn everything around.”

Wynn’s junior season is over after a loss to Gaffney on Friday, so his focus soon will shift to offseason workouts.

“(Thompson) was just telling me to work harder in the offseason, to get bigger and stronger, just to stay in shape and continue to work,” Wynn said.

He’s already starting to think about narrowing down his list of offers, and there are plenty of them. The list, which exceeds 20, includes Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Louisville, Michigan, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Tennessee.

“In the spring, I’m going to take some more visits. I’m going to narrow things down pretty soon. I’m not ready to release anything just yet, but something will come out over the course of the next couple of weeks, next month, possibly,” Wynn said.

Several factors will be considered as he continues to mull his final decision.

“Whichever place, when I walk on campus, I (want to) feel like I’m at home,” Wynn said. “Somewhere I feel like I can get a top education and be able to perform to the best of my ability as a football player and if I feel like I can reach my full potential there.

“Whether that’s me reaching my potential of being a pro athlete or not, and just getting a good degree and going into the workforce, having a good job when I graduate.”

This fall, he’s been to Clemson for three games: Troy, Louisville and Syracuse. Georgia hosted him for the Auburn game and he was at Tennessee when the Vols played Alabama.

He’ll make a return to Clemson for the South Carolina game if he’s not at the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa.

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Wynn is the No. 5 ranked strong-side defensive end in the Class of 2018. He’s also listed as as the No. 82 overall prospect in the country.
