DT DeAngelo Griffin lands Gamecocks offer
August 16, 2017
Four starters from the Crisp County High School (Cordele, Ga.) football team have received scholarship offers from South Carolina.
Quay Walker, an outside linebacker who’s committed to Alabama, is the only one from the Class of 2018. The rest are rising juniors, one of whom is committed to South Carolina: 3-star linebacker Ahdarrious Gee.
Earlier this week, 4-star athlete Jammie Robinson, who the Gamecocks offered as a defensive back, told defensive tackle DeAngelo Griffin that he was about to receive some good news from South Carolina assistant coach Mike Peterson.
“They watched my film and they watched whenever I went up there to do camp,” Griffin said. “They said I did a great job at camp. They liked the way I move and how I can run.”
Griffin, a 6-foot-1, 295-pound 3-star prospect, already has offers from Arkansas and Wake Forest, to go along with scholarship overtures from Kent State, UAB and Western Kentucky.
South Carolina’s hosted him twice this year, first for a spring recruiting event and again for Muschamp Camp.
“The facilities,” said Griffin, when asked what stands out at South Carolina. “And I like where the players stay at, 650 Lincoln. That’s nice.”
Defensive line coach Lance Thompson has kept a close eye on the No. 33 defensive tackle in the Class of 2019 (according to 247Sports composite rankings).
“When I went to the camp, he was right beside me the whole time, working with me,” Griffin said. “Whenever I did something wrong, he fixed it for me. He seems like a very good coach.”
Heading into the camp, Griffin thought he was going to commit on the spot, if an offer was made.
“Whenever South Carolina said they were going to offer me at camp, I was going to commit whenever they offered me,” he said. “When I did that, Arkansas offered me, and they’re showing me love, too.”
Griffin also visited Wake Forest this summer. In the fall, he’s planning to visit South Carolina, possibly with Gee for the Kentucky game. Arkansas could be a destination, too.
The 6-1, 295-pound prospect has a few factors in mind as he continues through the recruiting process.
“Better me in life, having a good education and getting me right for the next level,” Griffin said.
As a sophomore, he made 90 tackles and 3 sacks.
