Turns out USC quarterback Connor Shaw’s deeply bruised shoulder was more of an issue than Steve Spurrier let on during this week’s build up to East Carolina. In an emergency, Shaw could have played but the passing game would have been limited. And against the Pirates’ defense, Spurrier wanted to throw the ball.
And throw he did with backup Dylan Thompson. The redshirt sophomore from Boiling Springs completed 21 of 37 passes for 330 yards and 3 touchdowns in leading the Gamecocks to a 48-10 victory over East Carolina in front of an announced home opening crowd of 77,006,
many of whom were long gone by the final whistle.
Thompson made sure there was no reason for the fans to hang around by tossing first half scoring strikes of 7 yards to Rory Anderson and 30 yards to DeAngelo Smith. His passing yards were the most by a Gamecock quarterback since Shaw’s 311 yard performance against Kentucky last season and is the 17th highest single game passing performance in Gamecock history. This by a quarterback who had completed just two passes in his career prior to Saturday.
