Evaluating chances these 4 prospects join Gamecocks

October 31, 2017

Over the last eight days, a handful of 247Sports Crystal Ball selections have been issued for prospects left on South Carolina’s 2018 recruiting board.

Rick Sandidge to South Carolina (3)

Sandidge was joined by a couple of his teammates from Concord (N.C.) High School for the Vanderbilt game on Saturday.

Gamecocks fans should remain patient with the 4-star defensive tackle, who’s also considering a handful of other schools, including Michigan and Georgia.

Channing Tindall to South Carolina (3)

Since the start of football season, it’s been hard to get a good read on Tindall and where things stand for him. South Carolina, for the majority of his recruitment, has been his leader, though he changed his tune about a month ago.

While that may not necessarily mean the Gamecocks have fallen out of favor, it’s raised an eyebrow or two that Tindall (Columbia, S.C.) said he had no favorite.

The 4-star linebacker was said to have enjoyed a trip to Georgia a few weeks ago for the Mississippi State game. Apparently, that trip helped the Dawgs pick up some ground on the Gamecocks.

Clemson just entered the mix late last week and the situation is worth monitoring, but it’s hard to imagine the Tigers getting into the stratosphere currently occupied by the two SEC East squads.

South Carolina hosted him for a visit last weekend for the Vanderbilt game.

Tindall’s decision timeline still is to be determined, but it could happen soon.

Jovaughn Gwyn to North Carolina State (2)

Like Tindall and South Carolina, Gwyn has consistently been most interested in North Carolina State. He’ll take official visits to both schools, along with Duke.

Again, like Tindall, it’s been tough to make a read on the 3-star offensive guard, who watched the two teams play at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., to open the season.

Gwyn, who’s from Charlotte, isn’t expected to render a decision anytime soon.

Dax Hollifield to Virginia Tech (8), North Carolina (2)

The message we’ve strived to convey in this space for the last 5-6 months remains unchanged, as it relates to Hollifield. Though he regularly changes his mind about which school is his favorite, two schools have long been viewed — from this perspective — as the top contenders, based on intel and feel.

South Carolina or Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech or South Carolina.

That goes back to when it was just a three-team race with North Carolina also in the mix for the 4-star linebacker. Two others have since joined the fray: Stanford and Florida State.

Stanford has been firmly in the mix since this spring, when Hollifield expressed interest in the Cardinal during an on-site interview with SEC Country. His father, Aubrey, a former Wake Forest defensive lineman and assistant football/head basketball/assistant track coach at Shelby High School, has an advisory role in this decision-making process.

While the father isn’t pushing his son in one direction or another, it was clear to the son earlier this spring that the father sees a lot of value in going west for an education at Stanford. Hollifield will take a “mini official visit” to Stanford later this fall for the California game.

It’s important in the eyes of the Hollifield family that Dax sees a game at each school he’s considering; hence the upcoming trip to Palo Alto. His actual official visit, by the way, is set for January.

In the most recent in-person interview with Hollifield, he mentioned the importance of making the best decision for his future, not just in football, but in life after football. It’s certainly hard to argue against what Stanford provides that way. Plus, he likes the Cardinal brand of football. It would be a good fit.
