Remember this time last year, where South Carolina fans and coaches were pointing at the Gamecocks’ gaping holes at linebacker and shaking their heads?
Now those young bucks are the old men.
“We feel we got a pretty good two-deep depth chart right now. Three-deep in some places,” linebackers coach Kirk Botkin said. “We got great competition at every position and that brings out the best in football players.”
The first six games were rough on Botkin’s baby ‘backers in 2013, but the final seven displayed a group that was night and day in its fundamentals. Skai Moore wound up leading the team in tackles and interceptions while Kaiwan Lewis was third.
With USC having to replace chunks of the line and secondary, the linebackers will be in charge of easing those transitions. They’ll call the alignments on the field, and Botkin’s deep and talented squad may have four or five playing at one time.
The hope is the same as last year – the defensive line and secondary may struggle at first but at midseason, they’ll find themselves. They certainly have a map to follow
