USC went through another scrimmage Wednesday night at Williams-Brice Stadium and once again freshman tight end Jerell Adams looked impressive. Adams led the team with four catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. Steve Spurrier, who was back to his more traditional “so-so” assessment of the offensive performance also cited quarterback Connor Shaw for having a better outing than he did in the first scrimmage last week.
Below is the official USC practice reportfollowed by audio from Spurrier, defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward, the aforementioned Jerell Adams and running back Kenny Miles. Stats (provided by USC) are also included. Enjoy!
A large crowd that filled nearly the entire lower east stands was on hand to witness the South Carolina Gamecocks scrimmage for the second time during the preseason on Wednesday night at Williams-Brice Stadium. It was the final open practice of the preseason for the Gamecocks.
“It was a good scrimmage, because nobody got seriously hurt,” said head coach Steve Spurrier. “We had one slight concussion to (redshirt freshman cornerback) Ahmad Christian, but I think he’ll be all right. We got 85 plays in – a lot of good plays by the offense, some bad plays. A lot of good plays by the defense and (some) not so good plays by them also. The punters hit some good ones. The kickers hit some good ones and some bad ones. It was just practice. Hopefully we can learn from it and get better.”
The four quarterbacks who saw action had a bit of an up-and-down night overall. The quartet combined to complete 26-of-43 passes for 358 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw three interceptions. Redshirt junior Andrew Clifford was the top passer statistically for the second straight scrimmage, hitting 10-of-13 attempts for 142 yards. Junior starter Connor Shaw connected on 9-of-12 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.
“Connor was a little bit better than he was the first scrimmage,” noted the Head Ball Coach. “Clifford had another decent night. I thought we’d throw and catch a little better tonight when we had time to throw. We had a few overthrows, a few misfires, but that’s the way it happened. That’s why we keep rating them and keep judging our players.”
True freshman tight end Jerell Adams continues to impress in camp. He led all receivers with four catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. “I knew he was a six-foot five guy who could really play basketball,” said Coach Spurrier. “If you can play basketball, you can usually run and catch, and he can run and catch. He’s a talent.”
Junior running back Marcus Lattimore showed no ill effects from his surgically repaired knee, as he carried five times for 23 yards. “Marcus made a few runs,” said Coach Spurrier. “There wasn’t a lot of blocking, wasn’t a whole lot of holes in there, but he’s been going against the first defense. I think the first defense played pretty well most of the night.”
The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. That practice, and all subsequent practices, will be closed to both the media and the public.
