Bernie Machen came to the beach and drew a line in the sand.
“We won’t compromise on that,” Florida’s president said in regard to getting the top four teams in the upcoming college football playoff with no regard for which teams win their conference.
“I think the public wants the top four,” said Machen, who also serves as the president of the SEC through the duration of this week’s spring meetings. “I think almost, almost everybody wants the top four.”
The Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC would be notable exceptions to that statement. Those leagues want only conference champions to be eligible. Compromise will have to be made, Machen insisted, while also insisting it wouldn’t be his league that was compromising on that subject. The Big 12 also supports a top four model.
“Mr. Average Guy wants the best teams to play in the playoff, right?” Machen said.
The BCS oversight committee will decide the issue at its July 26 meeting in Washington, D.C. — or at least that is the hope. Commissioners from the BCS conferences will meet twice in July to sort through their differences prior to that meeting.
“I am reasonably hopeful we will get there,” Machen said. “What if one of the conferences says no? I don’t really know if know what happens if someone says no. It really does have to be a consensus model to work. I have thought about this. Suppose one or two say, ‘We’re not going to do it.’ I don’t know what the next step is.”
