First day for Gamecocks a good one
Spurrier impressed by conditioning

South Carolina’s football team hasn’t received the rings it ordered to commemorate last season’s historic 11 wins, but that’s the only reason the door hasn’t been completely shut on 2011, Steve Spurrier said Tuesday.

“We are just trying to get this team ready to go,” the Gamecocks’ coach said after his team finished its first workout of spring practice. “This team has a chance to be pretty good; they have a chance. We didn’t look very sharp today, but this team has some potential, I believe.”
South Carolina will have 14 more spring practices, concluding with the April 14 spring game.
“It was a good first day,” Spurrier said. “Hopefully, we’ll get a little bit better as the week progresses and be ready to have an excellent spring game.”
Spurrier was pleased by his team’s physical conditioning, he said.
“Joe Connolly and our strength staff did an excellent job of getting our guys in position to give their best effort,” he said. “I am really impressed with the times and the lifts and the strength and conditioning of our team right now.”
The first day of practice answered some questions, such as: Is Kenny Miles returning? The answer appears to be yes, as the senior running back who had been considering a transfer practiced with his teammates.
“Kenny looks sharp,” Spurrier said. “We fully expect him to be ready. He’s one injury away from being the guy. Even if Marcus (Lattimore) stays healthy, there is going to be the potential for Kenny to play a lot.”
The first day also produced some questions, such as: Where is Jadeveon Clowney? Last year’s SEC freshman of the year didn’t practice because of an academic issue, Spurrier said. The defensive end is expected to return to practice Thursday, Spurrier said.
As expected, Lattimore did not practice with his teammates. He will miss the spring after having surgery to repair the torn knee ligaments that cost him the final six games of last season. Lattimore jogged on the sideline briefly Tuesday while wearing a small brace on his left knee.
Tuesday marked the debut of four new South Carolina assistant coaches as Kirk Botkin (linebackers), Grady Brown (secondary), Joe Robinson (special teams) and Everette Sands (running backs) coached their first snaps at the school.
“They were about what we expected,” Spurrier said of his new hires. “They are excellent teachers, which is what I like. I like to see guys coach and not criticize so much this time of year. I think they are excellent additions.
