Five-star DE K.J. Henry recaps South Carolina official visit

November 12, 2017

Five-star defensive end K.J. Henry has finished his official visit to South Carolina. SEC Country has the latest on the No. 16 prospect in the 2018 class.

Henry’s mother and and younger siblings were with him the entire weekend. His father, Keith, an assistant coach at Charlotte, joined them for the end of dinner on Saturday night and stayed through Sunday morning’s wrap up.

“It was another great [visit],” Henry said. “Going through these visits, first of all, I like to make sure my family has a good time, which they did once again. I was telling coach [Will] Muschamp, what also adds to a good weekend is a win, so that definitely helped out as well.”

The West Forsyth High School [Clemmons, N.C.] senior has already taken official visits to Clemson, Georgia and Virginia Tech. Up next, before he announces a commitment in late December, is an official to Alabama, though no date has been arranged.

South Carolina’s recruiting effort is headed up by the man who runs the program. This weekend, Muschamp spoke about “the opportunity” to play the ‘Buck’ position for the Gamecocks.

“In this business and this game, nothing will be given to you. … But at the same time, there are always opportunities that can be given and there’s definitely an opportunity to make an impact from day one and really help this football team go up,” Henry said. “Seventy percent of the football team is freshmen and sophomores, so the success that they’re having this year really speaks a lot to the scheme that they’re running with the guys they have now.

“Obviously, really talented guys, but they’re young, not too much experience. So, like I said, the fact to have the opportunity, it probably is the biggest [attraction] for South Carolina.”

Bryson Allen-Williams and D.J. Wonnum, both of whom play the hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end position that Henry profiles at for the Gamecocks, spent a lot of time with him this weekend.

“Just getting to hang out with those guys and talk with those guys, built some good relationships with those guys this weekend, which I think, in this process, is also pretty big,” Henry said.

The position, he added, is “very versatile.”

“I think it plays a lot into the NFL aspect of having 32 teams and half of them play 4-down [linemen] and half of them play 3-down,” Henry said, “So you get to see that side of each player.”
