South Carolina fans received a little bit of a surprise last Friday when news broke that class of 2014 five-star offensive tackle David Sharpe 6'6" 281lbs (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence) was on campus for an unofficial visit.
Sharpe, who is the No. 2 offensive tackle in the country, hadn't mentioned the Gamecocks much before but took the opportunity to ride up and check out the program.
"I just wanted to see what they were about and learn more about South Carolina itself," Sharpe said. "It went pretty good. I got to meet some of the coaches. I enjoyed it."
The 6-foot-6, 288-pound Sharpe, who has offers from programs like Florida, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and Ohio State among others, is being recruited for the Gamecocks by wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr.
"I've been getting to know him more," Sharpe said. "We've been talking a lot lately. He's a funny guy. He's down to earth. He told me that I could fit into their program real well."
Spurrier Jr. showed Sharpe around campus. The massive prospect hopes to play basketball at the next level as well.
"They just showed me around the campus," Sharpe said. "They took me to the basketball facilities and showed me the basketball side of things even though the coaches weren't there. The campus itself was nice. They have a lot of tradition. I liked how the football stadium was separate from the campus. It wasn't in the middle of everything."
