Tried to think back to last season after the first game. I was in Charlotte for the opener with ECU, with some good folks from this forum actually. Connor Shaw was named the starter, he had a bad game, we fell behind early and he was replaced by Stephen Garcia. The team roared back to take the lead and ultimately, the win. While we were victorious, I left feeling less than great about our performance. Here are some things I was “sure” of:
1. We didn’t have a backup QB that was ready to play.
Shaw had been touted as the best all spring and summer long, so with that performance I assumed he just wasn’t ready to play when the lights came on. I believed and would’ve bet my house on the fact that we would’ve only
gone as far as Garcia would carry us.
2. The defense allowed a lot of short passed and didn’t stop the run very well. In short, they didn’t look dominant when I thought they should have.
Not until later in the game, anyway, when ECU had to start passing and the threat of the run was non-existent.
Sound familiar? Let’s not put so much into the first game when history tells us that it rarely tells us much about how the team will do the rest of the season.
