Coming off an embarrassing loss to the arch-rival, USC head coach Will Muschamp and his staff half to not only recruit uncommitted players to their program, they must also convince the committed to hold to their pledges.

DB Damarri Mathis of Lakeland, FL Monday afternoon became the 5th decommitment from the 2017 USC class when he announced he is reopening his recruiting.

“After talking to my family, I’ve decided that it would be the best for me to decommit from the University of South Carolina to open my recruitment,” is how Mathis put it on his Twitter page.

Mathis committed to USC June 17th saying at the time he had a good relationship with defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and liked the system he ran.

Mathis also has offers from Pitt, Central Florida, Ole Miss, Minnesota, Louisville and smaller programs.  His decommitment leaves the Gamecocks with 20 commitments for the 2017 class and five in the secondary.

Another committed defensive back, Tavyn Jackson of Tallahassee, has set an official visit to Maryland for this weekend.  While saying he’s still committed, Jackson said he doesn’t want to count out any school.  He also plans to visit Indiana this month.  Jackson said he is no longer planning to graduate early.
