After 20 years living in FL, this comes as no surprise. The hunting rules are so restrictive, few hunters bother to even try. As a result, it is not safe to swim in fresh water anywhere in the state. Even backyard pools can become a gator pond.

I don't know if you're familiar with a walking trail in Cayce named Timmerman Trail or not but I ride my bike down there 3 days a week and it's not unusual to see a gator on one of the banks of the Congaree Creek.  Growing up around here in the Midlands we never seen or heard of any gators being here.

Just looked up that trail online.  Looks like a great place.  Might have to check it out this fall when visiting my son back at UoSC.

Yeah it's pretty nice.  If you start at one end and go to the other end it's right at 7 miles one way.  About 80-90% of it is shaded.
