South Carolina’s signing day kept rolling along Wednesday morning, as the Gamecocks bolstered their defensive line class when three-star defensive end Aaron Sterling, a former Alabama pledge, announced that he would sign with South Carolina over Tennessee.
“Do you remember (former Florida defensive end) Dominique Easley?” Sterling asked SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner, after pulling the plug on his commitment to Alabama. “(The Gamecocks) want to use me that way where I play defensive tackle, nose, defensive end. They want me in a variety of roles because I can play both defensive tackle and defensive end.
“It seems like they’re going to market me better by playing every single position on the defensive line. When NFL scouts come and ask, ‘Can he play this technique?’ They’ll be able to see it on the film.”
Sterling de-committed from Alabama on Sept. 18, 2016, after taking an unofficial visit to N.C. State.
“The main talking points were if I fit the scheme, how well I relate to the coaches and if I’d go to that school if it wasn’t for football,” he said. “After thinking about it, I couldn’t go to Alabama without football.”
Sterling helps fill a key role on the South Carolina defensive line, along with early enrollee MJ Webb and the expected commitment of Javon Kinlaw. The Gamecocks struggled in 2016 to consistently apply pressure on the quarterback and win at the line of scrimmage, leading to Muschamp’s making a comment asking for pass rushers to come to South Carolina following the Birmingham Bowl loss to South Florida on Dec. 29.
The 6-foot-2.5, 250-pound prospect is the No. 18-ranked strong-side defensive end in the 2017 class.
