Former Gamecock coach Darrin Horn lands new head coaching job

April 24, 2019

Former South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn is back in the coaching business again.

After leading the Gamecocks to a 60-63 overall record from 2008 to 2012, Horn has been an assistant at Texas since 2015. Now, though, he is rejoining the head coaching ranks.

Per CBS Sports reporter Gary Parrish, Horn will become the new head coach at Northern Kentucky:

Watch and see how quickly "he whose name shall not be spoken" flames out again.  Not impressed with him as a recruiter.  Not impressed with him as a HC.  I hope that Northern KY knows what they're getting into with that hire.  I may tune in to some of their games just so I can get a laugh out of it.  (Can you tell I don't like the man?)

Horn being from KY and having a name based on his success at W. KY with Courtney Lee that got him the USC job and his time on TV broadcasting college games will get him in doors with recruits and he has shown that with talent he can win some games. I am with you in not being a fan of his but I find it hard to believe that he did not learn anything since his time at USC and think it is a good hire by a small KY school completing the transition to big time D1 basketball to bring home a local boy with ties to the basketball community and a history of being able to succeed.

Here's the thing about him... the man's an arrogant jerk, unless he has changed dramatically in the last 3 years.  And the Courtney Lee thing is overblown, as far as I'm concerned (as is the D. Wade connection) - he wasn't really the lead recruiter for either guy.  That was a once in a lifetime thing for "he who shall not be named".  Sort of akin to Ja Morant over the past year... people knew he had decent skills, but not that many schools were chasing him hard.  Both Lee and Morant used their opportunity on the D1 stage to shine, and then to get paid at the next level.

As far as his TV time, the guy wasn't all that impressive in those duties either.  Plus, it's been 4 years since he was on TV, so I don't know that it plays to his advantage much.

Regardless... I give him 5 years max before he crashes and burns again.  And I can't say I wish him the best after what he did to the program here.

He was in his 30's and not ready to take over a program with fans like USC, he is/was a prick of epic proportions while head coach of USC and his first year of success gave him such a big head that he had to have assistance to get in the arena so I understand your feelings. Putting all that aside I can see him having some success based on his past success at W Ky and having connections in the state. He did sign Gill and the Ellington, Harris and Slawson class was ranked 11th in the country, Lakeem Jackson and Ramon Galloway were decent recruits.

Are we still paying him money?

If not, then I'd prefer to categorize him as the worst coach of any sport hired in the last quarter century for Carolina, and just let it go.

Ouch.  I still remember him as a Kentucky killer.

Yeah he was.  I love me some NIT action anyway.

I actually got to meet Dave Odom several times along with Susan Walvius.  I have no ill will towards the human beings that tried to cheer us fans up every year.

Not sure.  I do remember Dave Odom beat Horn's Western Kentucky team in the NIT.

Of course Odom was THE MAN in the NIT.
What year was the Ball State home game in Frank McGuire arena?  I am thinking that was our first NIT Championship run

We beat Ball State 82-47 on 3/21/02 to go to New York for the first NIT championship (lost to Memphis in the finals).

That was the final game in the Frank.

Good info there.  We have done well vs. Maryland and Louisville in the NIT postseason.  Thanks to Frank we got a Duke and Florida NCAA postseason win.

Now we just need to schedule and beat North Carolina, and the circle will be complete! :D

Can we count 5 football wins against the Tarheels as a bball win?

LOL, that's like saving up 5 boxtops from your favorite cereal and mailing it off for your new favorite toy.
Peanut Butter Crunch please!

I actually crave Frosted Flakes more these days.

I wish Frank would face UNC in the preseason in Charlotte.
