Defending Big Ten West champion Northwestern has been searching for ex-starting quarterback Peyton Ramsey's successor during fall camp, and coach Pat Fitzgerald has found his man. Clemson transfer Hunter Johnson beat out ex-South Carolina starter Ryan Hilinski and senior Andrew Marty for the starting nod against Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 3, the team announced on Tuesday.

Sigh, do we have any QB talent that could start for another school?

I find it interesting that both Bentley and Hilinski were pretty well thought of coming in. They both started out pretty well, and our fan base was pretty excited about each of them and we thought they were the future of the program, and now they are both bouncing around and getting beaten for jobs. I think it’s the fault of Muschamp and Roper. Once they get hold of a QB, they can screw him up beyond all recognition.

Yeah - they were pretty highly rated coming out of HS. Not just QBs, but others as well, but never translated to on the field results. Something was just in player development it seems.

Hate to see this for the kid, I myself had great expectations for him.  I do put most of the blame on Muschamp and staff due to never really having a plan beyond that day.  To be an effective coach you have to plan for the worst case scenario and not throw a kid to the fire when they aren’t ready.

Sorry for Ryan as I think he is a good kid and has been through a lot.  Not sure what he would do with this staff, but I wish we got to find out.  The more I see from our previous staff, the less impressed I am with the player development.

Gonna be a long season.

The same thing happened to Jake Bentley at Utah last year, but he ended up winning the starting job later on in the season.

I am sure Ryan will get his share of PT this season.

I listened to the JB and Goldwater show the other day. They had Mike Morgan on, and he told a story of asking Bobo last year why Hillinski wasn't playing. Bobo said something like "I know what it takes for a player to make it in this league, and let's just leave it at that."
