In 2013 then Mauldin quarterback Dre Massey (6-0 190) compiled one of the greatest individual seasons in South Carolina high school football history. Massey passed for 28 yards and 28 touchdowns and rushed for 2050 yards and 34 touchdowns.
In a game against Boiling springs he accounted for 11 touchdowns rushing and passing and had 567 total yards. He went on to become the MVP for the North in the Touchstone Energy Bowl North-South game rushing for 72 yards and passing for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Massey signed with East Carolina in February 2014 but did not qualify and enrolled at Holmes JC in Mississippi. In 9 games last season he rushed for 503 yards, averaging 12 yards per carry, and 4 touchdowns. He also caught 5 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. So far this season Massey has rushed for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns and has 10 catches for 212 yards and 1 score.
Massey, who has been clocked in the 4.3-4.4 range at junior college, is now garnering major college attention including USC. He said the Gamecock recruiters Steve Spurrier Jr. and GA Mangus have been in regular contact over the past two weeks and Spurrier Jr. plans to visit him this week or next. The Gamecocks like him as a receiver.
“Coach Spurrier Jr. said they will offer me but he wants to see me face to face and offer in person,” Massey said. “I’ve always wanted to play in state and represent where I’m from. It would be exciting. An offer would move them to the top of the list.”
Massey has offers from Memphis, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Missouri, Mississippi State, Iowa State, Appalachian State, Illinois and Georgia State. He’s also getting interest from Alabama and has been there three times. He’s also visited Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri and Memphis. He is talking with the Gamecocks about an official visit for either the LSU game or the Florida game.
Massey said his grades are good, he’s on track to graduate in December and will have three years to play two.
