OL John Simpson (6-4 290) of Fort Dorchester is a big reason the Patriots are off to a 3-0 start this season. “His upside is unbelievable,” said Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad. “He’s tall with long arms, and he’s a competitor, tough as nails. He’s getting better every day.”
The big-timers already are taking notice of Simpson. USC is is first offer while Clemson is showing interest.
“He’s been to South Carolina a lot,” LaPrad said. “He went to camp there this summer and the Showcase. He went to the A&M game and will be in for the Georgia game. He and coach Elliott are close. He sure likes them. He can’t wait to see them every Saturday.”
It’s been suggested Simpson might be on the fast track to a Gamecock commitment but he says not, at least at this point.
“I was going to wait (on a decision) until I get more offers so I can see what college is the best for me playing wise,” Simpson said. “I’ll decide in my senior year. USC was my team growing up but I’m not going to say that’s where I’m going.” Simpson said he does plan to visit Clemson again at some point. He also camped there this summer.
Charlotte and Coastal Carolina are two others showing interest in Simpson right now according to his coach but LaPrad expects many more major programs to become involved.
Simpson will be joined Saturday in Columbia by two teammates including freshman quarterback Dakerion Joyner (6-1 170) who, according to his coach, already has an offer from the Gamecocks. LaPrad said USC recruiter coordinator Steve Spurrier offer Joyner after watching him in seven-on-seven competition at USC this summer.
“Everyone will offer,” LaPrad said. “He’s just different. He’s got the speed, the jumping ability and a cannon for an arm. He’s going to be big, over 6-4, 200. And he loves the competition. He does not back down.”
The third Patriot who will be in for the game is senior defensive tackle Eurndraus Bryant. He has offers from Maryland and Kentucky with interest from USC and North Carolina.
