South Carolina is dipping into Big Ten country to host a four-star defensive tackle. Naquan Jones 6'6" 245lbs (Evanston, Ill./Township) will visit South Carolina on Thursday unofficially but he doesn’t know much about the school. In fact, he’s never talked to any of the coaches, but he’s going to stop by and say hello.
Jones has a tie to the state of South Carolina through one of his former youth coaches and current trainers.
“One of my old youth coaches who I train with has ties in South Carolina,” Jones said. “He wants me to come down with him back to his hometown and visit the university. He told me I thought I’d have a lot of interest in South Carolina, so that’s why he wanted me to come down.”
As of Sunday night, Jones had not spoken directly with any of the South Carolina coaches but the 247Sports Composite three-star defensive tackle, who is ranked as a four-star player by 247Sports, is eager to see what the SEC school has to offer.
“I haven’t really been in communication with South Carolina too much,” Jones said. “I don’t really know much about the program. I don’t know anything about anything really. My trainer is setting it up, but it sounds like a great school.”
Jones holds offers from the likes of Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin and a few others. He hopes to trip this spring to Michigan State, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana and a few others.
Right now though, Jones is focused on seeing his first SEC school.
“I want to have a great relationship with the coaches,” Jones said. “I want to get down and see the campus and see the people I’d eventually be playing with.”
Jones, who said the closest he's been to South Carolina is Atlanta, Ga., isn’t in any rush to make a decision. He wants to wait and take official visits during his senior year and made an educated decision.
“I don’t want to commit early at all,” Jones said. “When I choose a school, I want to be sure it’s the perfect school. I want to take some official visits and see how those go. Then I’ll be able to make my decision.”
Jones is ranked the nation’s No. 23 defensive tackle and the No. 6 overall prospect in the state of Illinois.
