Four-star LB Dax Hollifield returns to South Carolina for junior day

Jan. 29, 2017

For the 2018 recruiting cycle, 4-star linebacker Dax Hollifield continues to be among the top priorities for South Carolina coach Will Muschamp.

On Saturday, the No. 2-ranked inside linebacker in the country visited again from Shelby, N.C.

“It was great. They had a bunch of official visitors there and they put us in with them, so I get to see how it would be if I went on an official visit,” Hollifield said. “I got a lot of attention. I felt like I was one of their more highly-targeted guys there, so I felt like I got a lot of attention.

“I got to talk to coach Muschamp a lot. Me and him sat down and ate lunch together, me, him and coach (Coleman) Hutzler. … We talked. I got a lot of attention. That was great.”

During the conversation with Muschamp, Hollifield revealed what his decision will come down to.

“I just want the chance to play,” Hollifield said. “I told him that I’m not going to go somewhere because I like the coaching staff better, because my top three, Virginia Tech, South Carolina and UNC — I love all the coaching staffs. That’s why they’re in my top three.

“But I told him I’m going to go to the place I can get the most playing time.”

Hollifield sees an opportunity to do that in Columbia.

South Carolina’s 2017 class has four linebacker commitments, but the only one who profiles as a middle linebacker is Sherrod Greene.

Plus, after the 2017 season, the Gamecocks will bid farewell to senior starters Skai Moore and Bryson Allen-Williams.

“I feel like I have a great chance. That’s what they told me, too,” Hollifield said. “They told me that me and Xavier (Thomas) will be the next step for the program, if they get both of us on defense.”

In three seasons at Shelby, Hollifield has 462 tackles and 107 tackles for loss.
