South Carolina is on top for an Alabama player with an Alabama offer. Four-star linebacker P.J. Blue 6'4" 205lbs (Jemison, Ala./Jemison), who is being recruited by the Gamecocks as a safety, says the Palmetto State school is the early leader for his services.
Of course, there’s a long way to go in the recruiting process and he still has some questions that need to be answered.
Right now though, Blue has a No. 1 school and it’s located about 400 miles due east of his hometown.
“I think really highly of the Gamecocks and right now, they’re my number one school,” Blue said. “They have a really good team, really good program and I really like the Gamecocks. Coach Spurrier and what he brings to the table is one of the reasons they really stand out to me. They win 10 games it seems like every year.”
Blue, who stands 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, is ranked as the No. 206 player in the 247Sports Composite rankings but was rated as an outside linebacker. The Gamecocks have chosen to offer him initially as a safety under former defensive backs coach Grady Brown.
Linebackers coach Kirk Botkin has taken over Blue’s recruitment for the time being.
“I like the defense they run,” Blue said. “Their base defense is their nickel defense. They told me that I can play any of those positions. That’s what really stands out to me.”
South Carolina recently hired NFL veteran Jon Hoke, who coached the secondary for the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears. Blue hasn’t had the opportunity to speak with Hoke yet, but he perked up when hearing of the new assistant’s background.
“I haven’t gotten to talk to Coach Hoke yet. I don’t really know much about him,” Blue said. “The fact that he’s been in the NFL sounds really appealing but I don’t know too much about it. I have to look more into it.”
Blue was scheduled to visit Auburn over the weekend for junior day but the trip fell through. Some of the other power players in college football are also on him for a visit.
“Alabama and Auburn are recruiting me really hard,” Blue said. “Auburn wanted me to come to their junior day last weekend but I couldn’t make it. Oregon is another school that has been talking to me.”
Blue also holds offers from Clemson and Louisville, among others.
Blue has not visited South Carolina but said he plans to come up this spring to see the Gamecocks first hand.
