Four-star running back Elijah Holyfield (Atlanta, Ga./Woodward Academy) visited South Carolina in mid-February and left with a positive impression of the program. In fact, he says he’s going to make a return trip to Columbia.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Terry Googer and walk-on defensive back Benji Russell are former Woodward Academy standouts and they made sure that Holyfield had a great time on his visit.
“I really enjoyed the visit. I have a couple of teammates who go there, and I had a really good time,” Holyfield said. “I’ll probably be back again to stay with those two. They’re a school I’m considering. They’re in the SEC, play big-time football and have produced good running backs.”
The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder has a laundry list of schools vying for his services. From the Florida Gators to Southern California Trojans, schools from coast to coast want the son of former boxing great Evander Holyfield.
Holyfield said playing in the SEC is important to him but if there’s one place outside of the conference that may cause him to rethink that plan, it’s Notre Dame.
If South Carolina does come under serious consideration, and it’s hard to believe right now the Gamecocks have more than a puncher’s chance for Holyfield, it will be in part because of his teammates already at the school but in part because of his recruiter, co-defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward.
“I’ve known him a long time because he’s recruited a lot of players from my school,” Holyfield said. “We have a pretty good relationship. He sends me stuff every day and we talk on the phone once a week at least.”
