Four-star teammates visit South Carolina for 7-on-7 tournament

June 11, 2017

Frederica Academy was one of several high schools to send 7-on-7 teams to compete at South Carolina this weekend.

The school in Saint Simons Island, Ga. is home to 4-star wide receiver Jashawn Sheffield and 4-star athlete Jaylin Simpson, both of whom were in Columbia on Friday for the first 7-on-7 tournament of the weekend.

Sheffield, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 25 overall prospect in the Class of 2019, arrived with a Gamecock offer already in hand.

“I enjoyed it,” he said. “Played against some good competition and got to spend some time with the coaches.”

Simpson, the No. 228 prospect in the 2019 haul, was offered during the tournament. That, he said, was “kind of a surprise.”

“Coach (Will) Muschamp has been by the school before and didn’t offer,” Simpson said. “Guess he wanted to see more.

“Saw that he liked (me), so it’s all (good) now.”

Along with Muschamp, a host of assistants spoke with Sheffield, including defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon, running backs coach Bobby Bentley and tight ends coach Pat Washington.

Muschamp told Sheffield that he liked what he was “doing on the field” and to “keep it up.”

South Carolina’s second-year head coach encouraged him to return for a second visit. Sheffield said he’ll definitely be back, though he isn’t sure when that will happen.

The Gamecocks are recruiting him as an athlete, to play defensive back or wide receiver.

“Same thing I hear pretty much everywhere,” Sheffield said.

There’s no preferred position or side of the ball for the next level.

“I just want to help whatever team win,” Sheffield said.

Muschamp and Robinson want Simpson to play defensive back, which could be an appealingly option. The Gamecocks defensive coordinator, according to Simpson, has “lots of energy” and is “fun.”

“I could play for him,” Simpson said. “(He’s) proven, too.”

Sheffield has similar feelings about Robinson.

“That’s my guy,” Sheffield said. “We talked about a lot of stuff.”

Florida State and Ohio State have received selections on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for both prospects. Clemson and Florida are also heavily involved.

Sheffield recently told SEC Country reporter Zach Abolverdi that he and Simpson will play together at the next level.

“That’s been my best friend since fifth grade, so me and him are not going to separate. We keep each other balanced,” Sheffield said.
