Frank Martin gone

Thanks for all you did here Frank and I wish nothing but the best for you.

I was busy doing other things today and found out when I just happened to Google Frank's name.

Oh, well.

Realistically, there are no solid upperclassmen for the new coach to work with, so I won't be wasting money on tickets next fall until the wins come and I don't think they will.

Been going to the home games since SEC play in the 2013-14 season because I liked the fight in Frank's teams and that DID come from him.

Things may change, but I believe I will give the home games a rest for now. The ticket office doesn't honor most season ticket requests anyway.

They fired the wrong guy. You'll see.

Wouldn't that be a hoot if Frank were to be hired as Tom Crean's replacement and do better than he did here?
Georgia has already hired Mike White away from Florida.

I like Martin but it was time for a change. We always seemed to hover around .500 and had bad early season losses. Always felt we were playing catch up. I don’t know if anyone can do better but we need to try.

You can also unfortunately say the same thing about Tanner.

Thanks to coach Martin for the amazing Final Four Run. That was up there with the 2 baseball championships and the couple of best years under Spurrier. For whatever reason, we were not able to capitalize on that performance and build a sustaining program. Wish him the best.

Frank's system forces an opposing team to play fast physically and mentally, but it also puts the same pressure on his players.

What I have noticed over the years is problems arise when we would take a couple of losses and that caused some players to lose faith in the system. Whatever they tried didn't work, either, and it went on for enough games that we couldn't make either the NCAAT or the NIT.

Realistically, things like this happen in other sports as well.

In a situation like that, the AD needs to come over the top and reinforce Frank's system with the problem players (and possibly their parents).

I seriously doubt Tanner ever did anything like that and that's why I say we need a new AD as well or things will continue to be mediocre here. That's just an opinion, but I think it's a pretty realistic one.

An AD also shares some responsibility in creating "a destination job" as well as a head coach. Again, JMO.

Martin told the Gamecocks that he would always be in their corner and that he would always consider them his players. He encouraged them to stay in contact with him and to have their parents call him if they had any questions.

Once Tanner started talking to the team, Martin left the room. Reese, who has no more college eligibility, followed Martin out of the door.

“I ain’t gonna lie: I walked out,” Reese said. “I stood up right behind Frank and walked out behind him. And I was just like, ‘No disrespect, Ray Tanner, but this really don’t have nothing to do with me.’ ”

Reese stood in the hallway and talked with Martin as Tanner addressed the rest of his teammates and fielded their questions.

The news was a crushing blow to much of the team, which thought it had done enough to reverse any ill will created by last year’s 6-15 finish during the COVID-19 pandemic. But another season without postseason play — after last making the NCAA tournament in 2017’s Final Four run — was enough for the USC administration to make a change.

“We got 18 wins with nine new guys,” Reese said. “And I just kind of felt like Frank did a great job with a new team that he had and figured out ways to get some great wins and have a winning season. So that’s what I felt like was just so great about what he did and why it kind of bothers me that he’s not going to be the coach again.

Up the road in Fort Mill, the parents of freshman point guard Jacobi Wright first found out their son’s head coach had been fired over Twitter.

“Cobi called us about 30 seconds after,” father Chris Wright told The State. “He just called and told us the news and said all the players were pretty bummed about it. Pretty much all of them didn’t agree with it — from the report I got. So it was tough. “I just hate it for Frank, man. He’s such a good dude. He poured his heart into these kids. I could just tell that he was heartbroken himself. I can just tell from the interaction that he had with the kids.”

This year's team was pretty popular with the CLA home crowd despite it's record. I still say they fired the wrong guy.

I have mixed feelings. I like Frank, but, he's had 10 years and made 1 final NCAA appearance. Many coaches have been fired for less. And, new president may have had a say. Question is, how well can Tanner hire?

Hard to count the first 2-3 years against him and the 2 years of COVID should be thrown out the window since we would have made postseason play in once of them... Even without that if you look at the culture and program, just look at the players that play for him and the amount of support he has gotten for the program from past players, the amount of support he has gotten from the local coaches it was just a matter of time and the matrix being used to hire and fire coaches is just STUPID!! So if we bring a guy in that makes the NCAA tourney for 5 of the next 10 years and he loses in the first round are any of the same folks crying about Martin going to be happy? NO THEY WILL NOT! IF the next coach can't get GG Jackson to commit he will have started off on the wrong foot with the fans that ran off Martin, you fired the wrong guy! Hope you hire the right guy!

Frank's players are loyal to him like Will's were to him and I thought he had a really good FR class this year and some of the wins didn't come because of the FRs.

I am worried we will lose most of the team to the portal and possibly transferring to wherever Frank gets hired next.

Somebody WILL hire him after the NCAAT.
