Frank Martin post game quotes vs Auburn

Jan 04, 2022

Frank Martin: I'm not worried about Keyshawn (Bryant). He's in really good spirits. He's in a much better place to handle adversity than he was a couple of seasons ago. I just hope the shoulder (sprained AC Joint) is ok.

Frank Martin: Offensively, we didn't play well. We played 3 point guards and nobody played well. We turned it over 20 times and didn't shoot it well. Erik (Stevenson) shot it well, but we didn't shoot it well as a team.

Frank Martin: James Reese is one of the best defensive guards I've been around. Auburn was able to play two guards and whoever James (Reese) wasn't guarding was put into action and hurt us.

Frank Martin: I was disappointed in Jermaine (Couisnard) but the guy hasn't practiced. That's why I played him in the second half. He's got to get back into game shape. League games are different. A different energy.

Frank Martin: On Bryant leaving injured: I asked him if it popped out (shoulder) and I was told it's an "AC joint sprain." Everyone's different with an injury like that so we'll see if he can play.

Frank Martin: Bench let us down. It was disappointing. But to their credit, they played like a top-10 team that has played a league game.

Hard opponent to open the SEC with.   USC is still trying to gel.  Time, practice and games will help them improve.   Tough game on Saturday at Vandy.  But Vandy does not have a Kessler, which should help us.

Covid threw the team out of it's regular game/practice routine and Auburn is always really good under Pearl.

Frank's system forces an opponent to play fast against us, so a team like Auburn will kick us if we are off our game like we were last night.

The one pattern I have noticed is Frank says his players this year are always eager make the necessary adjustments after a bad game.

He knows he has a good team and I don't think he feels the need to push them coming off Covid issues if he knows they will rebound if they make mistakes.

Covid is going to make this a weird season in terms of scheduling anyway.

I expect us to bounce back against Vandy and maybe more than expected.

Stevenson wasn't intimidated last night.  Hopefully he and Reese will anchor the team in league play.

Not much from the Carters in this game.   What happened?  I couldn't watch this one.

@gamecock88 Chico, per the radio announcers (I, too did not get to watch), was simply not able to play up to the level of the SEC competition last evening.  Devin limited his own minutes because of bad shot selection.  He lofted a few that Frank benched him immediately for.  He also forgot how to play defense.  Both were disappointing, but will learn from the early REALLY difficult SEC play.  (I mean, come on... Aubie in your first scheduled conference game?  That's gonna sting no matter what the outcome.  They just bruise you, no matter who you are).

The loss of Keyshawn hurt, but I don't think he would have affected the outcome much... too hard for him to get to the basket with a high flying dunk.  AJ Wilson had a tough evening, which hurt us.  Cousinard's lack of play as of late also hurt us, but you cannot fault him for that issue.  Josh Gray was getting murdered around the basket, but the refs were not calling it.  It was bad enough that Derek Scott and Casey Manning were both complaining about it (with Derek Scott being QUITE vocal).  The new SEC referee apparently was paid off by Bruce Pearl before the game... at least that's the way it sounded from Derek Scott's perspective.

Wasn't a terrible loss in my mind.  We played some REALLY good basketball in the 2nd half, but we simply did not have the bench depth to compete with a team as strong as Auburn.  Had Josh Gray been able to actively compete, without hindrance from the officiating, and scored a few buckets... probably a different game with the 'Cocks JUST squeezing out a "W".  We were just mis-matched with Auburn, and especially given our guard play... As Frank Martin noted, whoever James Reece was NOT guarding was able to go off throughout the evening.

This guy needs some help from his teammates on offense.

Having said that, I expect us to do well against most of our other opponents.
