First year USC basketball coach Frank Martin spent a lot time in his season preview Tuesday praising his team, but stopped short of making any bold predictions for them.
Martin was asked about how many SEC teams would make the NCAA Tournament this year. He indicated about half were good enough to make it, but stopped short of putting the Gamecocks in that half:
“What was that lady that used to come on TV that used to make predictions? She got put in jail. She wasn’t very good at it. Yeah, Cleo… She got paid to make predictions, she got put in jail. I’m not into that prediction stuff, I’m into working.”
Well done, Frank. After years of the “building a program” mantra it is nice to have some personality at USC basketball press conferences. Martin and the Gamecocks will open practice Friday. To say he’s excited about that would be an understatement.
“I’m just excited for Friday” Martin said. “The guys have made tremendous progress here the last six weeks or so. They’re excited about Friday. We as coaches are excited about Friday. We can’t wait. Friday can’t get here fast enough for us.”
