From the P&C: Gamecocks’ Luke Doty spending summer preparing for all sides of being QB1

I love this quotation from the Cloninger P&C article:

keyboard-clicking among those who just can’t wait until USC makes a decision with which they disagree.
So true, about a portion of our fan base -- whose preferred activity is criticism instead of cheering.

Hope he makes some strides in throwing the ball - and our WR don't drop so many passes.  I think he is very talented, but I am still in wait and see mode until I see a better passer in Doty.

“He’s an amazing leader for our team. You know what you’re going to get, energy level-wise, every day,” receiver Trey Adkins said. “The whole offense rallies behind him. I think he’s going to take us far.”
Exactly the same thing they said about Collin Hill at the beginning of last season.

Just ask Collin Hill, last year’s starter until halftime of the Missouri game, when he was benched in favor of Doty. His season began well but quickly spiraled downward; he could have played better but it wasn’t his fault his receivers’ hands turned to stone and that he hardly ever chose to run on a knee thrice recovered from a torn ACL.
The QB is important, but he has to rely on his teammates.  The pattern with the revolving door of QB's the past several seasons is they look good for 2-3 games, opposing DCs watch film on them after they get a few games under their belt and by Game 4 said QB becomes a non-factor.  Eastern Illinois and ECU will be Doty's Games 4 and 5.  Then it's UGA.

Dual-threat QBs just have not done well here and it's not even close.  We always end up going to a Pro-style offense and QB and sucking.  Doty will look great until he gets banged up, we'll go conservative (read: Pro-style QB) and suck.  We just haven't stayed with a DT QB long enough for me to get excited about Doty's mobility and speed on the ground.

For all the hype about Doty's speed, he's going to need a good OL and I hope they are doing extra Cheetohs curls over the summer.

It's still the same guys as last year for the most part.  Don't get me started about our Swiss cheese defensive secondary.

The UGA game will be where the rubber meets the road.  Win or lose, opposing coaches will watch the UGA film and eat our lunch like they have the last several seasons.

The results of the last 3 games of last season with Doty at the helm:

Sat, Nov 21

vs Missouri

L 10 - 17

Sat, Nov 28

vs (9) Georgia

L 16 - 45

Sat, Dec 5

@ Kentucky

L 18 - 41

An offense that can't score more that 21 or 28 per game plus a defense that gets scored on every possession will only get you to the bottom of the SEC real quick.  There's a lot of stuff that will need fixin' once the regular season starts.

Doty will have to be close to perfect each game if his teammates play as bad as they did last season.  I am a realistic optimist at this point.

You pretty much dog on him and the team the entre post, then say your optimist? I hate to see your pessimism.

Connor Shaw had great teammates around him and defenses much better than the ones during the Muschamp era.  One TD off of a QB run doesn't win games for us unless there are other scores to go along with it and the defense has to make stops on third down.

The teams Shaw was on were ranked more often than not.  Muschamp's teams have just been rank.  We're the bottom feeders of the SEC right now until something changes this season.

My post was about the rest of the team more than Doty.  The lack of the usual number of football posters right now says I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I'm optimistic Beamer will right the ship but realistically he's going to have his hand's full the first part of the season and maybe the whole one if he waits until mid-season to make changes like Muschamp did.

It just depends on how long he waits before putting his recruits in place of some upperclassmen.

If you cant understand why Doty didnt have the numbers in his 3 games last year, I cant help you. Head coach fired, WRs dropping balls, team was pretty much done and going through the motions. It was as bad a situation as any player would have to deal with. The locker rooms is so much better than last year. The guys are doing things as a team or unit and are really pushing each other as hard as they can. All the coaches are always availible including Coach Beamer. Every player can call any coach he likes, anytime of the day.

I think we will get a surprise or two this year and will probably look better than most would think. We have enough talent on this team right now to win 7 to 8 ball games if the stars alighn. I tell you this, I would not take any other programs offensive back field over ours. Not even close in my book. Go Gamecocks

Yeah, I don't think the mailed in trio of games at the end of the season can tell us too much about Doty beyond the fact that he seemed to care more about those games than anyone else on the field ... but last season is last season - let's see what an entire offseason with his new OC and working with the receivers can do.

Add in...Bobo was never a dual threat guy. You have to design an offense around someone like Doty. I think Satt knows his stuff and I suspect Beamer's playbook has lots of dual threat elements. One would think with Connor Shaw on staff, no one is forgetting what got us 33 wins in 3 seasons.
