Fugar set for visits and then a decision
Phil KornblutSPORTSTALK January 4, 2023Western Illinois transfer OT Sidney Fugar (6-7 330) has set two official visits for this week, and then he should be ready to make a decision. Fugar will visit Cincinnati Wednesday and Thursday, and he will head to USC Friday for a weekend official visit. His mother will join him on the trips.
USC offered Fugar Sunday. He and offensive analyst and fill-in offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley have known head other since Teasley was the offensive line coach at North Carolina Central. Teasley has been heading up the Gamecocks’ recruiting efforts with him.
“I’ve been talking to him every day actually,” Fugar said. “I feel like I’m having a good experience with him. I feel really good about it. I think I’ll have to wait and see how it feels when I get there, but for sure they are showing me as much interest as possible. Coach Teasley has shown me nothing but love, and I’ve talked to (offensive coordinator) Coach (Dowell) Loggains.”
Fugar said on these official visits he wants to see which school checks off more of the boxes for what he thinks are the most important factors for picking a new school as a transfer.
“It really all comes down to would I come in there to make an impact,” Fugar said. “How are the players mindsets. Is this a real winning culture. How badly do the coaches and program want me. Am I going to play here. That’s all the little key factors that definitely impact my choice of where I want to go.”
Fugar entered the Portal in early December. He’s also attracted offers from Murray State, Northern Arizona, Southern Illinois, Northwestern State, Troy, Hawaii, Eastern Kentucky, ODU and East Carolina.
Fugar appeared in one game for the Leathernecks in 2021 and redshirted. He played in nine games this season and was named the team’s Offensive Lineman of the Year.
